Upgrades to the tune of $2.85 million are expected to put all South Australian high schools "on track" to welcome the influx of Year 7 students from 2022.

The move of Year 7 to high school, unveiled in 2018, is aimed at bringing new opportunities for the state's students, workforce and system.

This latest investment will be used to update learning facilities and equipment, such as painting walls, replacing carpet, new lockers, preparing outdoor spaces or new furniture and textbooks.

More than 75 schools will each receive $15,000 for each Year 7 class they gain in 2022.

Another 65 schools will receive $2000 per class if they have already received funding for capital works.

In addition, the handout is expected to boost local businesses and trades during the coronavirus pandemic.

Education Minister John Gardner said the new move has put SA "on track" to bring the year level into high school by the arranged time frame.

"These grants, along with the major school upgrades already underway across the state, will make sure our schools are well prepared to accommodate Year 7 students and make their transition to high school as smooth as possible," he said.

Mr Gardner added how each school has different requirements for how they use their funds, depending on their own needs.

The grants fall under the state's $1.3 billion in education capital works designed to meet demand in areas with rapidly-growing public school enrolments, ensure the transition of Year 7 into high school, and deliver a generational upgrade of schools across SA.
