Christians in the Torrens Valley are working hard to be witnesses of love and the love of Jesus.
There is a great need for care and support for those doing it tough within our community.
Whether it be financial hardship, loss of loved ones or life’s ups and downs, the combined effort of the churches within the Torrens Valley area is able to provide assistance where needed, food hampers, support and general care and concern have been given; TVICC would like to thank the community for their support in these areas.
As well as their commitment to the Pastoral Support Workers in the five local primary schools in the district and the one-on-one mentoring that is delivered through the Kid’s Hope Program to children at the schools, TVICC has also been supporting SUPA Clubs within the district, where parents encourage their children to learn more about Jesus. Two SUPA (Scripture Union Primary Age) Clubs are now up and running.
One in the Memorial Hall in Birdwood on a Monday afternoon after school, which has been running for eight years and recently a second SUPA Club began every second Tuesday in the Springton Hall at 4pm, which gives children from Mount Pleasant the opportunity to also attend.
All the leaders hold the same standard of Police Checks as school teachers and signed permission slips from parents are required for children to attend.
Both clubs are free but gold coin donations are encouraged at Springton to help cover costs but are not compulsory.
The SUPA Clubs are run as part of Scripture Union Australia, which has been operating for years all over Australia, running family beach missions and camps for children.
The programs encompass bible study, afternoon tea, singing, games and craft activities and moral standards and concern for one another are encouraged.
We are so fortunate to have active community-minded people in our midst to give these children this opportunity to learn about Jesus, whom they can turn to in difficult times.
If you would like your children to attend either of these clubs, please ring Pastor Daniel Marks 0429 018 739 for Birdwood or Suzie Lanthois 0414 407 468 for Springton.
Because Birdwood has been in operation for eight years, there are now children at the Birdwood High School who continue to come along and attend a senior session.
They would love to see more high school children coming along to learn about Jesus and to strengthen their resolve to make good decisions and be positive members of their community.
Torrens Valley Inter Church Council is made up from all the Christian Churches in our district.
It was formed over 20 years ago to keep communication within our churches active and to give them a united platform for good works in our community.
The employment of the Pastoral Support Workers at our local schools began 20 years ago and has been very well received in the schools especially at times of crisis like the Sampson Flat Bushfires, when children were particularly stressed.
Helping children to understand their mood swings through various fun therapies can help children to settle down and absorb their lessons so much better.
All the churches come together annually for a Combined Church Service in the grounds of the National Motor Museum to pray for and showcase the great work our PSWs do in the schools.
There will be a Progressive Dinner fund raiser on Friday, May 24 beginning at 6pm at the Birdwood Catholic hall and moving on to the Birdwood Lutheran hall for the main course and to the Birdwood United Church for dessert and coffee.
Put this date in your diary and come along for a night of fun.
Entry at the door is by donation but please phone the Lutheran Church secretary on 0408 847 465 if you intend attending to help to estimate food requirements.
The event of the year, the “Dinner Under the Stars” in November will also be a fund raiser for school chaplaincy in our district. For more information head to www.dinnerunderthestars.org.au or www.facebook.com/Dinner-Under-The-Stars.
If you would like any further information on any of the above or would like to know more about God and his son Jesus, please don’t hesitate to contact one of your local churches.
