The Gawler Arms Hotel was packed to the rafters with revellers on Saturday to celebrate Zellica Hassan’s 90th birthday.

Mrs Hassan, who has lived in Gawler for 40 years and is known to her friends as “Lil”, found herself surrounded by 140 friends and family at the surprise birthday event.

Her son, Ray Hassan, said he was more than happy to help set up the big event.

“It was a big surprise for mum to see so many people turn up to help enjoy this special day,” Mr Hassan said.

“Mum is the last of her family still with us.”

With an interesting family history, ‘Lil’ has a lot to look back on.

Mrs Zellica is the daughter of a cameler in Broken Hill, Zaidulla Fazulla.

“That (Broken Hill) is where she met and married Ray “Chocky” Hassan - who was the son of an Arab cameler,” RayHassan said.

“Mum has lived in Gawler for over 40 years and has made lots of friends young and old.

“We as a family would like to thank the staff and owners of the Gawler Arms for the great service and smiles for this large luncheon.”
