About 100 international wine delegates and industry enthusiasts from the ten Great Wine Capitals are in Adelaide this week to take part in the Great Wine Capitals Annual General Meeting (AGM) program, which runs from November 3-9.
On Tuesday November 6, the delegates spent the day exploring Barossa, which included a conference at Yaluma Signature Cellar and sampling fortified tastings at Seppeltsfield Fino.
The event’s theme this year is ‘Old World, New World, Our World’, acknowledges the Great Wine Capitals Network members’ similarities and contrasts, while also highlighting South Australia’s strengths in innovation and collaboration.
Barossa Grape & Wine Association (BGWA) Chief Executive James March said the Barossa’s participation in the event allows the region to show off its strengths and best practice examples on the global stage.
“The Great Wine Capitals Global Network brings together some of the finest wine regions in the world and celebrates exceptional international wine tourism experiences,” Mr March said.
In July 2016, in recognition of South Australia’s 18 wine regions, Adelaide joined this prestigious network. Other Great Wine Capitals in the global network, which includes regions such as San Francisco/Napa Valley (US), Bordeaux (France), and Bilbao/Rioja (Spain).
Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Tim Whetstone welcomed a number of distinguished international guests from the Great Wine Capitals Network.
“Hosting the AGM presents South Australia’s wine industry with the opportunity to learn, collaborate and share information in the wine sector – with internationally acclaimed delegates and enthusiasts,” Minister Whetstone said.
“Network members don’t view each other as competitors but instead work together to learn from each other and continue to grow and protect the wine industry on a global scale.”
Regional Development Australia (RDA) Barossa CEO Anne Moroney highlighted the need for wineries to connect and collaborate.
“The Great Wine Capitals Global Network allows wine and tourism businesses, and the region, to connect with the top wine regions of the world,” Ms Moroney said.
“There are also great networking, knowledge sharing and bench-marking opportunities through Adelaide’s participation.
“It won’t just happen though. Businesses need to actively engage.”
Great Wine Capitals Global Ambassador and Penfolds Chief Winemaker, Peter Gago was enthused to see many international wine delegates in South Australia.
“As members of the network, we share best practice, innovation in wine production, biosecurity, academic exchange and wine tourism,” Mr Gago said.
“This is a unique opportunity to exchange wine insight and wisdom amongst fellow global wine leaders.”
Topics covered during the conference at Yalumba included Growing Grapes in a Changing Climate, Responsible Vineyard Visitation and Digital Marketing.
