An idea generated halfway across the world has sprouted in the Barossa, resulting in the founding of the region’s first locally produced artisan gin house.

Famous for its vineyards and world-class wines, the Barossa welcome its newest tasting opportunity with owners Nicole and Jon Durdin opening the doors of Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers last Thursday.

A former police officer and accomplished musician, Mrs Durdin now juggles life as a freelance orchestral musician with crafting Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers’ portfolio of gin.

As a seventh generation Barossa resident, Mrs Durdin has strong ties to the area, which is evident in the distillery’s focus on sourcing as many local ingredients as possible.

“The idea for Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers was born in Winchester, UK where we lived for Jon’s work,” she said.

“I was in the middle of a career crisis and so we dabbled with the idea of starting a distillery. Within a matter of months, we had purchased the land and a Carl still from Germany, and there was no turning back”

Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers launch with three distinct gins in its portfolio – House Gin, Barossa Dry, and Savoury Allsorts.

The couple focused their initial efforts on crafting the product, while developing their tasting room on a picturesque plot on Seppeltsfield Rd, at Marananga.

The creative and welcoming space features one of the best decks in the Barossa – the perfect place to take in the quintessential view while sipping a gin and tonic and watching the gin crafting process in action.

“It is a wonderful location and the Seppeltsfield Road community is hugely supportive,” Mr Durdin said.

“We feel very fortunate to be able to offer something a little different in the Barossa.”

With Mrs Durdin working the still and Jon overseeing the development of the business and facilities, Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers has been fortunate enough to secure Bec Henderson, formerly of Appellation at The Louise, as its tasting room manager.

As well as gin and tonics and gin cocktails, also available on the menu is grazing platters complete with regional favourites and some international small goods.

The gin house is open from 11am-5pm Thursday, Sunday and Monday and 11am-6pm Friday and Saturday.
