Historic soccer match for Tanunda

Tanunda played host for the first time to a Barossa United A grade home fixture, as they faced top side Unley United in the historic match at Faith College.

Barossa threatened early, drawing a couple saves from the Unley goalkeeper, with midfielder Matt Dyson striking a cleared ball over the crossbar as well.

On 14 minutes, Unley opened the scoring, drawing goalkeeper Adrian Walker off of his line as the left winger coolly finishing past Walker’s reaching hand.

Walker made a fingertip save against the same opponent minutes later, then released striker James Ruwoldt on his right wing. Ruwoldt got two heavy touches, but just on the final lunge close to goal put his shot over the crossbar.

On 27 minutes, Unley’s left winger struck again thanks in part to the rub of the green. Barossa struck back minutes later with Paulo Correia earning a penalty at the top edge of the box.

Ruwoldt stepped up to hit Barossa’s first home. Walker then intercepted an Unley break, and Barossa’s best on the day,  junior central defender Josh Lambert, chased down and stopped Unley’s double-scorer getting a hat-trick. After half-time Unley’s left-winger sprayed wide near the penalty spot, then centre defender Joel Halman made a vital intercept off a controversial on-side call.

An unfortunate foul at the top of the penalty box saw Unley extend their lead to 3-1. Halman was on the double minutes later intercepting a clear goal chance.

From the corner, Unley’s striker curled it beautifully to a glancing header, but Walker was equal to the task with a finger tipper over the crossbar.

On 69 minutes, the game spilled into controversy with Correia spat upon and the offender sent off with a second yellow card.

From the free kick, Ruwoldt was released wide unmarked, but his shot went high and wide. Midfielder George Clarridge’s free header from a corner was saved on 75 minutes, then in an ugly tackle left winger Stu Shipway was crushed and went off with a serious leg injury.

Unley hit the right upright on a rebounded corner, but on 85 minutes the ball was slotted past walker for Unley’s fourth to win 4-1.

Best - Josh Lambert, Lenney Lower, James Ruwoldt, Joel Halman, Matt Dyson.
