A Port Pirie man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court this afternoon charged with the murder of a Barossa man.
Late on Friday afternoon, Matthew James Loleit, 39, appeared in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court via video link, making no plea and no application for bail.
Loleit was arrested late on Thursday night when police and paramedics were called to a camping ground at Telowie Beach, where they found the body of 49-year-old Rory ‘Meggs’ Elliott from Nuriootpa.
Police allege Loleit is known to the victim and was with him prior to his death.
Superintendent Damian Powell from the Yorke Mid North Local Service Area addressed the situation early Friday afternoon, saying that police were continuing to conduct searches of the immediate area where the man was found.
“There may be further searches of the surrounding area,” he said.
“Part of the investigation will be to determine if there are any witnesses in relation to the charge that has been alleged.”
Loleit will appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Wednesday May 2.
