Fruit crushing of a different sort is set to take over Nuriootpa’s Home of the Brave cellar door this weekend.
Inspired by the La Tomatina festival held in Bunol, Spain, each year, First Drop Wines’ inaugural Vivo Tomato festival on Sunday, February 25, promises a messy, fun and tasty day out for the family.
Best of all, all proceeds from the day will be going to the children’s charity, Variety SA.
“Vivo Tomato is a celebration of all things tomato – sauce making/preserving, pasta, pizza and La Tomatina style battles,” First Drop co-owner John Retsas said.
“It will be a great family day.”
La Tomatina is a Spanish food fight festival held each August in the town of Bunol, near Valencia.
Thousands of people make their way from across the world to take part in one of the world's biggest food fights, where more than 100 metric tonnes of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
The Vivo Tomato battles will bring the essence of La Tomatina to the Barossa with tomato fights held in the “main ring”.
Local personalities and punters will go head to head, pelting each other with locally grown tomatoes to settle scores and amass a tonne of laughs.
“We will only be using tomatoes that would normally be used for landfill or animal feed for the La Tomatina battles,” Mr Retsas said.
Festival-goers will also be able to learn how to make tomato sauce “the old fashioned way” and 1000 freshly made tomato sauce (long neck beer) bottles will be available to buy and take home.
Food and drink on the day will, naturally, include First Drop’s range of wines from the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills.
The crew from Pizza e Mozzarella and Borsa Pasta Cucina will keep bellies happy with hot wood oven pizzas and fresh pasta, all featuring SA tomatoes.
Also on offer will be quality coffee from Hey Cuzz and a selection of cocktails from Ambra Liquers.
