Traditional German story told in Nuriootpa

A cheerful crowd of 50 adults and children braved Saturday night’s cool temperatures to take part in the third annual Laternenlauf (Lantern Walk).

The event, held at the Joy Rice Centre in Nuriootpa, was run by the Barossa German Language Association.

Laternenlauf, known as walking with lanterns, is a German tradition held on St Martin’s Day and recognised each year on the country’s calendar. It honours a solider who assisted a beggar.

Saturday’s event saw a group of children participate in a lantern making workshop and a play re-enacting the story of St Martin, before heading outside for the lantern walk.

Visitors were treated to traditional delicacies including pretzels, Wiener sausages with sauerkraut and glühwein.
