Winners crush the grapes

Ben Radford and John Kalleske were both honoured at the 2015 Declaration of Vintage celebrations in Tanunda. 

Radford, managing director at Rockford Wines was named Winemaker of the Year, while Kalleske was awarded Vigneron of the Year.

“It’s a great honour to be standing here in front of friends and peers,” Ben said.

“I was very surprised and I am honoured. It’s not something you expect.

“Thank you very much for this award and I hope I can be a future mentor to the next generation.”

Kalleske, a sixth generation Barossan was equally as honoured and felt quite humble to be named  Vigneron of the Year by the Barossa Barons. 

“We just do our own little thing in our patch of the Barossa,” Mr Kalleske said. 

“I think when you work with nature you are much more observant to the things around you” 

Jamie Nietschke of Moppa also received an award for services to the industry from Barossa Grape and Wine during the declaration of vintage celebrations.

The 39-year-old is a grape grower and runs a dairy farm with his family. 

He is also heavily involved in the community and volunteers hours of his time among various community groups and committees in the Barossa Valley and regions. 

“I would like to give a huge thank you Barossa Grape and Wine for this recognition,” Jamie said. 

“It was certainly a great surprise for me to win this award.

“It is important that if you value the community you live in you help where you can.”
