Star Tanunda wingman Leigh Westhoff (pictured) fractured a fibula just above his left ankle in Berri on Saturday.
Playing for the Eastern Zone, Westhoff was injured against Central Zone when still upright fighting against a tackle he felt another player slide into his legs.
“I’m going to be in plaster for six weeks,” Westhoff said. “It’s a pretty clean break so it didn’t require surgery.
“I’m confident I can give myself a real shot to make it back and hopefully play in another grand final.”
The biggest problem for Westhoff will be the muscle conditioning in the leg (his kicking leg) the lack of ligament damage in the ankle itself is a plus but getting his leg back into football shape will require some intense rehab.
The injury raises the question regarding insurance and whose responsibility this falls under. BL&G president Robin Symes said he was actively pursuing an answer to assist Leigh who does not have private health insurance.
