Barossa Pony Club success

Riders from Barossa Valley Pony Club, along with those from other clubs of the Lower North Zone, competed at the state championships at Strathalbyn earlier this month.

After winning the ‘team on the flat’ section at the zone championships in August, the Barossa team rode a beautiful test against the best teams from throughout the state to finish second.

The team, which consisted of Tori Lehmann, Corrin Linke, Molly Ellis and Zoe Thompson, had put in many hours of practice leading up to the competition and their hard work paid off with watchers rating it as their best performance.

Barossa riders fared well in the individual preliminary dressage, with Samantha Coleshill and her pony Akora Miss Macy taking out first place, and Molly Ellis on William Sweet Wynkie finishing a very creditable third.

In the team competition of the preliminary dressage, the Lower North Zone team, made up of riders from Barossa, Williamstown, Gawler River and Mt Pleasant, was victorious.

Some of the best pony club combinations in the state are able to showcase their skills and versatility in the ‘Horse and Rider of the Year’ competition which is made up of a novice dressage test, show jumping at one metre and an individual novelty.

Barossa’s Corrin Linke, on her horse Fab, won the title at last year’s state champs and finished a close second this year.

The mounted games is always a crowd favourite, with teams of four riders taking part 10 different ‘games’, requiring speed and accuracy.

The Lower North Zone team won the Composite Team division with terrific team work and skilled riding and Mount Pleasant took out first place in the club section.

The younger and less experienced riders from Barossa Valley Pony Club are now looking forward to representing their club at the ‘Mini Zone Champs’ which are to be held at Belvidere Pony Club (Freeling) on Sunday, November 18. This competition is a perfect introduction for these riders in an encouraging, friendly atmosphere.

New members are always welcome at Barossa Valley Pony Club, regardless of age or experience.  Please contact Helen Giersch on 8564 2813 or Carol Lehmann on 8564 0363 for further details.
