The Grant Burge NV Sparkling Shiraz Cabernet has been crowned the World Champion Sparkling Red Wine at the inaugural Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships, held in London this month.
Against wines submitted from all over the world, the quintessential Australian Sparkling red blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon made using the traditional European fermentation method beat all other contenders from around the world to take the crown.
Dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the sparkling wine world, over 650 entries from 16 different countries were received in the first year of judging, with 185 wines winning silver medals and above.
Tom Stevenson, competition founder and Chair of The Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships, was delighted for the fifth generation Barossa Valley winemaker.
“I am so pleased that such an iconic Australian Shiraz name has taken the top spot in the very first Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships,” he said.
“It’s a pretty stylish wine. We’ve always had amazing feedback from both the trade and our customers when we pour the sparkling red in market, but this is a nice acknowledgement from some industry peers,” Grant Burge said.
“I have a real soft spot for the wine. As a family we’ve always started Christmas Day with the Sparkling Shiraz Cabernet on the back lawn at our home in Krondorf.”
In true Burge style the wine also has a secret fortified ingredient.
“We actually use two of our Vintage Port’s in the dosage. The 1996 Shiraz from the 1887 Shiraz Vineyard and the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Lyndoch foothills are crucial in adding complexity as well as sweetness to the final blend,” Grant said.
The Grant Burge NV Sparkling Shiraz Cabernet has a recommended retail price of $29.95 and is available through most fine wine retailers nationally.
