I just had a phone call from a “private” phone number with a very strong Indian accent sounding young man , called ‘Brian’, who said he was calling on behalf of the Australian Government.
He said that I was entitled to $5248 as a refund from the Australian Government because the “bank has overcharged fees” to me.
I was told to phone 02 8003 4140 to talk to his supervisor (of which there are a few different supervisors that I might talk to) and that I had to give this supervisor an “Application Code” so that they can help me claim my Bank overcharged fee (refund of $5248).
He did ask for my birth date to “verify” and also my first name.
I believe this is a scam. I believe if I went ahead with this phone call to the NSW phone number, then I am sure that they will want my bank account details and I would end up with my account being emptied.
I phoned my bank manager and the bank does not have any notification about such a thing happening and also said to be cautious about this call.
Then I received another phone call from the “private” phone number with an irate Indian accented young man asking me why haven’t I called the NSW phone number he gave me a little while ago.
He was quite persistent in asked me “don’t I want to receive the money the bank has overcharged me?”
I told him I believe he is part of a scam and hung up on him.
It looks like these people are determined to try to scam us out of our money (ie the money we may have in our bank account).
I am very sure the Australian Government or the real banks would not be calling me like this.
If anything they would be writing a letter and posting a cheque included with the letter.
Please warn your readers about these very insistent scammers.
