Tanunda 45

Freeling 33

Tanunda had their best season in more than a decade culminating with a 12-goal win over Freeling.

The win was the sixth for the Magpies and in fact that tally betters the total number of wins for the senior ones over the past five years.

“I am very pleased and very proud of the girls,” Janelle Steinberner, Tanunda coach said.

“The players deserve all the accolades, they are a talented group and now believe in themselves.

“They play for each other and it is part of a different culture we are trying build.”

Defenders Jodie May and Kate Jolly along with midcourt Nicole Crouch were Tanunda’s best.

For Freeling, after an injury ravaged season, it was a disappointing result but the Redlegs, with seven wins, finished fifth on the premiership table despite their problems.

“It wasn’t the outcome we wanted for the last game of the season,” Deb Meaney, Freeling coach said.

“We weren’t able to win a quarter as Tanunda applied pressure to every contest. We weren’t able to stop their defensive drive. Congratulations to Ellen Mace on her first senior one game for Freeling, she gave it her all.”

Freeling’s best were goal shooter Jess Schirmer and Katie Clark who played wing defence and centre.

South Gawler 85

Barossa District 20

South Gawler unveiled a new team structure as they scored a 65-goal win over Barossa District.

With goal keeper Cassie Egel sidelined for the rest of the year with a fractured elbow, coach Karina Cook put star midcourt Anna Dunn back to goal defence with Lee Barnett moving back to goal keeper.

“We have promoted 2s player Erin Butcher as the wing attack and Carmen Gaskell has moved into centre,” Karina said.

“It was a good hitout leading into this week’s first semi-final against Kapunda.”

South’s best were Carmen Gaskell at centre and wing defence Brooke Giorgetti.

For Barossa District co-coaches Taryn Wills and Bronwyn Venning their horror season continued right to the finish.

“We had player unavailability and injuries again which didn’t help,” they said.

“While it was a bad season, we have been able to give senior one experience to some good young players such as Kimberley Hage, Amy Drumm and Rhianna Thompson and we thank Bec Adams and Stacey Nelson for helping out.”

Best players on Saturday were Laura Slade in defence and midcourt Stacey Nelson.

Willaston 65

Angaston 38

Willaston ensured they kept the double chance for the 2010 finals with a comprehensive 27-goal win over Angaston.

Willaston coach Lisa Wilson said it was a solid win to finish the minor rounds.

“Again, we changed things up every quarter and everyone adjusted really well,” Lisa said.

“Angaston came out strong and stuck with us for the first quarter then we were able to break away.

“However, Angaston played hard for the entire game.

“Our defence was fantastic, but we still threw away a few too many balls in attack.

“I’m happy with the team’s overall performance and it shows we are in good form heading into finals.”

Willaston’s best were Mel Tump (wing attack) and Emma Hillard at wing defence and goal defence.

Angaston captain Carly Clarke said she thought her side stuck to their task all day.

“I didn’t think the final margin was indicative of how well we played,” Carly said.

“We applied pressure throughout, and it was just a few minutes each quarter which saw Willaston increase their advantage.”

Angaston’s best were wing attack Chloe Roesler and goal attack Lucy Summerton.

Kapunda 59

Nuriootpa 41

Kapunda’s last ditch effort to grab second spot on the premiership ladder fell short despite their 18-goal win over Nuriootpa.

Needing a massive win to jump Willaston on the table, Kapunda came away with a good win but coach Lee-Anne Cummins described the victory as “patchy.”

“We played some good netball but also burnt a lot of the ball and that is something we will have to work on,” Lee-Anne said.

“We were able to build our lead during the game to win and now look forward to playing South.”

Kapunda’s best were circle defender Ella Mickan, centre Penny Chappell and goalie Tab Mackenzie who only missed four shots during the game.

Nuriootpa coach Sarah Smith was happy with her side’s effort.

“We took it up to a very good side all day and I am pleased with the development of the girls during the season,” Sarah said.

“Our pressure to half-time was very good but Kapunda stepped it up a level after the main break.

“I think the girls have gained in confidence during the year and our defence was probably the best of the sides outside the top four.”

Nuriootpa’s best were midcourt Kendall Barter (Kabinye Wines), defender Jodie Kurtz and midcourt Lynlee Mangelsdorf who each won Nuriootpa Chicken Centre vouchers.
