Willaston 66

Kapunda 56

Willaston ‘recruited’ former premiership defender Leah Torzyn to help them score a 10-goal win over Kapunda and grab second spot on the premiership table.

Willaston coach Lisa Wilson was proud of her side.

“We struggled to get seven healthy players on the court with phone calls on Saturday morning from Emma Hillard (tonsillitis) and Kirby Wilson (hives) saying they were out,” Lisa said.

“After being down four at quarter time, the team pulled together and fought back like I have never seen.

“All seven players worked extremely hard in defence and things just flowed perfectly in attack for the rest of the game.

“Kapunda being the solid, fantastic team that they are, fought back many times and changed things up, however we were able to keep our foot on the pedal and keep the intensity high to win.”

Lisa said the best player awards went to the entire team.

Kapunda coach Lee-Anne Cummins said her side’s chances had not been helped when star goalie Tab Mackenzie was bitten by a bee on her shooting hand during the warm up.

“Tabby took tablets but her fingers were badly swollen but she said she was right to play,” Lee-Anne said.

“I was annoyed to see Leah play because she can’t qualify for finals and Willaston had nine players in their 2s.

“While it was within the rules, I struggle with the morality of the decision. At least we won’t have to play that Willaston lineup again this season.

“Our second quarter let us down on Saturday going from a four-goal lead to a six-goal deficit by half-time and we struggled to get back.”

Kapunda’s best were goalie Lana Farley and centre Penny Chappell.

South Gawler 51

Tanunda 43

South Gawler warmed up for this week’s important clash with Willaston with an eight-goal win over Tanunda.

“Full credit to Tanunda, they really made us earn the win,” Karina Cook, South Gawler coach said.

“It was a perfect lead in to this week as we really had to change our game throughout to keep our advantage.

“We had a few different combinations and probably didn’t adapt to their pressure as well as I would have liked.”

South’s best were the defensive trio of Cassie Egel, Lee Barnett and Brooke Giorgetti.

Tanunda coach Janelle Steinberner said ironically it was arguably her team’s best performance of the season.

“Even though we’ve won four games, all seven girls played with enthusiasm, intensity and a self-belief,” Janelle said.

“South had to make changes to try and keep their lead while I was able to stay with the same seven throughout. It was only short bursts in each quarter which enabled South to build a lead.”

Tanunda’s best were goal attack Megan Hoklas who shot at better than 80 per cent and Kate Jolly who gave a lot of drive at goal defence.

Gawler Central 54

Angaston 31

Gawler Central ensured they were 2010 minor premiers with a 23-goal win over Angaston.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Tigers, who despite leading all day, only really established their superiority with a 19-6 final quarter.

“After two tough weeks, we had a few team changes this week which meant a bit of a different line up and gave promising 2s player Krystal Butler her first full senior one game,” Graham Fischer, Gawler Central coach said.

“Credit to the girls for another excellent win and adapting to a different lineup.”

Central’s best were defenders Tracy Patton and Karen Wozniak.

Angaston captain Carly Clarke said her side was pleased to have kept Central to less than 60 goals.

“Our defensive pressure for the first three quarters was excellent and again, it was only one quarter, this time the last, which let us down,” Carly said.

Angaston’s best were defender Jodie Bain and wing attack Chloe Roesler.

Nuriootpa 56

Barossa District 25

Nuriootpa proved too strong for Barossa District in a one-sided game at Williamstown.

“While we expected to win, we made sure we approached the game knowing we still had a job to do,” Sarah Smith, Nuriootpa coach said.

“Barossa was fired up for a big effort but I was happy with the way the Nuri girls approached the game.

“We still had some minor lapses but now look forward to meeting Kapunda in the last game of the season.”

Nuriootpa’s best were Jodie Kurtz (Vine Inn), Kylie Falkenberg (Valley Gourmet Pizza) and Heidi Wood (Red Rooster).

Barossa co-coaches Taryn Wills and Bronwyn Venning said despite the margin the girls had fought hard all day.

“Unfortunately last minute illnesses again left us a little undermanned,” they said.

“Defensively we worked extremely hard and managed to create quite a few turnovers which we didn’t capitalise on. We didn’t value the ball and made too many basic skill errors going into attack.”

Laura Slade had a great game at goal keeper and goal defence while Kristal Ruchs, in her first full game back from injury, was back to her great shooting form. Amy Drumm at wing defence played extremely well and managed quite a number of intercepts.
