Coaches appointed for Barossa and Light netball

10 Jan, 2012 03:20 PM
Senior One netball coaches for the 2012 Barossa, Light and Gawler Netball Association have been finalised.

Nuriootpa has appointed Robyn March as senior one coach and former senior one player and coach Sarah Smith to head senior two.

At Freeling, it is a case of ‘back to the future’ with highly-respected Lynette Carmichael taking charge.

Kapunda has chosen Paul McGrath top take over from Lee Anne Cummins who has taken the senior role with city club Health and Life Phoenix.

The appointments follow the announcement last year of club senior two coach Maria Fraser taking the senior one role at Tanunda with the unavailability of Janelle Steinberner through work.

Alli Prior, head of the coaching selection panel at Nuriootpa, said the club was delighted to have Robyn and Sarah as their two main senior coaches.

“Robyn was an assistant at state league reserves level with Cougars when they won premierships as well as coaching at Adelaide Metro level and Sarah is a great club person who is happy to take the 2s,” Alli said.

“Our club registration day is Sunday, January 15 from 11am-2pm.”

Freeling last year established a Development committee to help build the club into the future.

Toni Oliver, who was on that committee, said it had been decided that club stalwart Lynette Carmichael was the right person to lead the club’s playing list.

Previously having coached in the early 90s and again for one year in 2004, Lynette is keen to develop the young talent.

“I’m excited about the season,” Lynette said. “We had trials in November and pre-season training for the our group starts at the end of month.”

Paul McGrath, who has been an umpire in the association recently, put his hand up to take over at Kapunda.

Club president Sarah Johnson said Paul would not be the first male to be in charge of the senior one team at the club.

“Tony Truscott coached the club to a premiership in the late 1990s,” Sarah said.
