CLUB NOTES

TANUNDA

This proved to be a more successful week for the club on the greens. A few wins in important matches has left several teams well placed for the finals.

Midweek Black started very well with an 'all rinks up' win in the second v third clash against Freeling on the carpet. All players performed very well, recording good wins against strong opposition. Congratulations to Bernie Wallace, Barry Williams (best not mention the last end) and Jeffrey Garrett, who took out the 'Rink of the Day' prize in winning by 18 shots.

The Midweek White side travelled up the hill and recorded a very good win, finishing two shots up overall thanks to the win of Dean Goodwin, Peter Baverstock and Trevor Ratsch. Although they will not figure in the finals, it was an excellent win. It has always proved difficult to win at Angaston.

Saturday's pennant matches saw the Division One and Three sides recording good wins and the Division Two sides both finishing 'second'.

Division Two Black were away against Nuriootpa Black and found the opposition pretty tough. The team skippered by Alan Price only just missed out in a very low-scoring, tight game. The teams were level five times during the afternoon but their opponents were just in front when it counted.

Division Two White were looking for a win against the top side to cement their place in the finals but went down overall, despite the seven-shot win of Hedley Rohrlach, Dean Koch, Ian Frick and Trevor Ratsch.

The Third Division match saw Tanunda hosting Nuriootpa Black on the carpet. The match was close for much of the afternoon but the home side gradually moved to a winning lead as the game drew to a close. Good wins by the teams skippered by Tanya Leech and John Miegel and a drawn match, enabled the Division Three side to keep their chances alive as the end of the season draws near.

Division One travelled to Eudunda looking for a good enough performance to enable the side to stay in touch with the top two clubs. The match proved to be a very tight affair until afternoon tea but Tanunda managed to draw away during the latter part of the afternoon. Well done to Charlie Mahoney's team who battled from behind for most of the afternoon, only to snatch a one-shot win with a 'two' in the last end. The 'Rink of the Week' prize went to Stuart Pech, Darryl Grear, Deon Heidenreich and Peter Rost who played very consistently throughout their match.

The Wohlers award this week was won by Kathy Wallace who represented Region 4 very well in the Country Championships.

NURIOOTPA

The Nuri Division One side built on their good form last week and posted another solid win at Kapunda on Saturday.

Rob Grope's crew continued their good form with a big 21-shot win while Trevor Billings produced the goods to help Stewart Allen claim the points. Russell Walker put in another great skipper's effort and Wayne Williams made some big conversion shots for his team. Wayne received great help from Rod Garrett who led the way all afternoon.

Division Two's Nuri Gold kept a firm grasp on top spot with a strong showing at Tanunda.

Ian Klaebe's team enjoyed a seven-shot win while Peter Buckley's troops suffered a rare loss. The destroyers for the Gold side were Neil Collyer's boys who trounced their opponents to the tune of 26 shots. Les Cook and Don Bessell gave Neil a great start while Noel Christophersen provided the polish.

Nuri Black enjoyed a solid win at Tiger Park with all rinks up over Tanunda Black.

Both Trevor Gibbons and Trevor Elix guided their teams through to victory while Neil Jaensch added to his impressive record finishing 15 shots ahead.

Division Three's Nuri Black has made its run home to the finals a little difficult with a 13-shot loss at Tanunda. The one positive the side can take from the match was Phil Jones' troops never say die effort. Down 15 to 1 in the early going, Phil rallied his team to draw level on the last end at 25-shots-all.

Thursday's midweek action saw wins for both Nuri Gold and Nuri Green with both sides eying a spot in the final four.

Russell Walker and Trevor Gibbons, for Gold, scored wins while Neil Collyer kick started his great week with a big 19-shot win.

For the Green team both Wayne Williams and Rod Garrett posted solid wins.

Nuri Black may have blown its chances of finals' berth with a loss at Kapunda. Aaron Jones put in a winning performance for the Blacks to get Ron Ellis' crew over the line. Nuri Blue fell short of the mark at Lyndoch with only Peter Buckley's boys finishing in front.

After an eventful draw for the Wohlers award Graham McCormick emerged as the eventual winner.

KAPUNDA

Kapunda midweek ladies did not play due to the country round robin.

The men's midweek Black team had a 71-48 win over Angaston Blue, with Terry Rae's rink gaining the upper hand in the second half to win 32-14. This gave Terry Rae along with Warren Bevan and Peter Hart the rink of the week 18-shots up. Ron Rogers' rink winning 23-17 after a good contest, and Geoff Redden's rink having their narrow lead snatched away right at the end to finish on 16-17.

Midweek Red had a 60-49 win over Nuriootpa Black, with Bernie O'Reilley's rink pulling away after tea to finish on 22-11, Fred Hier's rink withstanding opposition pressure to win 21-18, and Craig Sunman's controlling the second half but not quite closing the gap, finishing on 17-20.

In Division One, Kapunda suffered a 71-114 loss to Nuriootpa. Martin Dew's and Ron Rogers' rinks were always in contention but could never quite close the gap, going down 22-26 and 19-27 respectively. In Geoff Redden's match the margin blew out in the middle stages and remained more or less the same up until the 18-28 result. Terry Rae's rink started slowly but were still in it up until the tea break. After a frustrating second half they went down 12-33.

The Division Two rinks suffered under the Angaston sun to go down 47-79. All rinks battled to control their bowls and Angaston managed to draw winning shots. Jack's rink managed to pull back after being up early to go down 22-26. Peter's rink was keeping close early, but couldn't win an end after the afternoon tea and went down 12-27. Keith's rink was in a similar position going down 13-26.

Division Three Kapunda Red travelled to Lyndoch playing on a well grassed but heavy green. With the hotter than predicted but fine weather, conditions were trying and while the home ground advantage may have been an additional factor, Kapunda went down two rinks with final scores 52 shots to Lyndoch's consistent play of 72 shots.

Craig Sunman's rink set an early lead and managed to finish two shots up over Alex Gerrard in a keenly contested game (20 to 18 shots).

Brett Cummins' rink opened well, but at tea time were down 7 to 14. On return to the green they matched scores but were not able to reduce the Lyndoch lead finishing 18 to 26.

Don Franks' rink were only able to match some of the plays by Lyndoch, who steadily maintained their progress to end 14 shots up for the day

Division Three Black travelled to Eudunda and were able to overcome the heat and difficult greens to finish the game two rinks up and with three shots in hand. John Baldwin's rink were quick to put shots on the card, and able to keep on improving throughout the game to finish 23-16. While Keven's boys were first on the card, a close game was to follow with the lead changing back and forth until the 20th end when they scored five shots to give them a good break, going on to win by five shots, final score 27-22. Meanwhile Christine's rink had a mixed bag, away well but not able to maintain the lead, down at the break, then allowing the Ron Hams' rink to maintain the upper hand, going down nine shots to finish 15-24.
