Commando raid on Gawler Cup

17 Mar, 2010 11:08 AM
The Globe Derby harness racing circuit was ‘lit up’ during the Gawler Gold Cup meeting on Saturday night.

Horses trained in the Light Regional Council area won two of the five feature races on the nine race program.

Bk Commando, trained at Bagot Well between Kapunda and Eudunda by Peta Brown, won the 2010 Podiatry Care Hambletonian Trot over 2645 metres and was driven by her husband Terry.

Clarenden Electra, trained by Claire Goble at Wasleys, was successful in the 2010 Stallion Station Gawler Oaks over 2230 metres.

The Gawler Gold Cup went to Mister Anthony, trained and driven by former Angle Vale resident Geoff Webster.

Repelem, trained and driven by Ryan Hryhorec at Globe Derby Park won the Domenic Virgara Memorial Classic and Jonathon Kingston-Mayne, from Angle Vale, trained Jacks on the Rocks which scored in the Gawler South Bakery Gawler Derby.

South Australia’s top driver David Harding was successful on Clarenden Electra and Jacks on the Rocks and he also landed Jills Pride later in the night.

The Bk Commando is a story of success bringing success.

The former New Zealand trotter is owned by Peta Brown in partnership with Gawler Belt harness enthusiast Terry Manuel.

“I’ve been involved in the harness game with Terry and Peta (Brown) for a while and we’ve had some success with horses such as Protector and Lombo Afterburner but rather than spending the prizemoney we put it in the bank,” Terry explained.

“We decided to reinvest it by buying another horse and picked up Bk Commando which cost us $16,000 all up to get her to Peta’s stables.

“With tonight’s win and good form for us with two other wins and a placing we are well on the way to covering her cost.”

Clarenden Electra is owned by Clarenden Standardbreds which is managed by Claire Goble’s partner Dennis Lyle. The filly was also bred by the Clarenden team.

The win made up for an unlucky second with Clarenden Serene in the 2009 Gawler Oaks when the filly was beaten in a photo after racing wide on the home turn.

Clarenden Electra’s win also saw her turn the tables on Carlisle Queen which started favourite on Saturday night.

“Carlisle Queen beat us in last year’s Southern Cross fillies final,” Claire said.

“Clarenden Electra is a stronger filly this year and has been an improver.

“We may look to the BOTRA Pace with her in a couple of weeks and also the Southern Cross three-year-old series later in the year.”
