Tanunda’s key signing

09 Jan, 2008 09:33 AM
In their centenary year, Tanunda Football Club has collected forward and utility Ben Britton as a key recruit.

Originally from Tasmania, Britton, who will turn 25 in March this year, was recruited to Central District at the start of the 2006 season and played two senior games in an injury-riddled two-year stint at Elizabeth.

Previously, Britton played football with Tasmania in the VFL competition and the Burnie Dockers in the Northern Tasmanian Football League (NTFL).

“I played football with Sam Agars and Tom Schiller at Centrals and Tanunda did pretty well last year,” Britton said. “There wasn’t any real thought of going back to Tassie, because my partner Kim and I are happy in South Australia.

“I thought I’d try my luck in the BL&G.”

Britton said at Centrals he had to deal with back, shoulder, ankle and knee complaints.

The Burnie Dockers won five consecutive senior flags in the NTFL from 2001 to 2005 and Britton played in four of them. The only premiership he missed was when he was controversially dropped for the 2003 senior game, but displayed strength of character, securing best on ground honours in the reserves victory.

At 187cm and 85kgs Britton will be a versatile acquisition for Tanunda in their premiership quest. He also suggested if his form warranted selection he would be keen to play representative football for the association.

“Ben is a utility tall who can play forward and back,” Magpies coach, Steve Lubcke said.

“He will become the floating extra tall our group needs and will complement the established group.”
