Kapunda’s Brad Valentine and Tanunda’s Ben Newberry have been selected in a 24-man squad to represent South Australia at the Australian Country Carnival.
The championship, which is held every second year, begins tomorrow (Thursday) in Shepparton, Victoria.
State country coach Tony Fielke said both players would be important members of the SA team and would need to play well if the state was to be successful.
“Brad will play in a key defensive role, while Ben will be used in the middle,” Fielke said.
“Valentine is a very good defensive player who can also provide run and attack from the back half.
“Newberry is a link man who reads the play very well and also is excellent at delivering the ball to advantage.
“Luke Wells can also be considered unlucky not to make the side, as the decision came down to between him and another big man for the second ruck spot.”
This year marks SA’s return to the country carnival for the first time since 2002 after a lack of funds prevented appearances in 2004 and 2006.
Fielke said South Australia had a tall mobile defensive structure which he believed would be a key to the team’s success.
“We are not a pacy group but are very experienced with many of the squad having played league in the SANFL.”
Meanwhile, former Gawler Central player Ty Potticary, made his state debut at Under 23 level in the SA amateur league’s annual match against the Victoria last Saturday in Melbourne.
Potticary was given a job of tagging one of the Victorian stars after quarter-time and did a good job, unfortunately the SA team lost by 70 points.
