Seventh heaven

17 Sep, 2009 11:30 AM
Warm, blustery conditions did nothing to dampen the spirits of the players or crowd at the ACCU Barossa Hockey Grand Finals on Saturday.

In the final match of the day the Nuriootpa Hockey Club produced a seventh straight A Grade Men premiership.

The 2-0 win over Tanunda was achieved through goals from Greg Schulz and Brad Fairey and an outstanding effort in defence from Graeme Walker and Marty Gallasch.

Despite the best efforts of the Tanunda’s defence, in particular goalkeeper Daniel Southern, the pressure inflicted on them by Nuriootpa proved too much.

Tanunda had their chances however Nuriootpa proved too strong.

They worked back hard in defence and were willing to put everything on the line to win the ball.

In the A Grade Women’s match up the 2008 runner up, AM United, improved on last year’s performance.

The battle with Tanunda was competitive through the midfield and was exciting to watch.

It was AM United’s relentless pressure whcih proved the match winner, and a late goal brokeg the deadlock to earn a 3-2 victory.

In the other games...

Tanunda earned its first senior men premiership since the mid-80s with a win in the B Grade Men.

Tanunda built on their strong performance all season to secure the B Grade Men’s premiership.

The Tanunda ‘Turtles’ came out of the blocks hard and scored a 3-0 victory over Nuriootpa.

The B Women provided yet another close fought game, much to the delight of spectators.

The game went into golden goal extra time where AM United proved too strong for Nuriootpa.

After an impressive Under 17 minor round Tanunda went into this game as favourite, but had to fight hard to hold off Nuriootpa 1-0.

The Under 15 game between Nuriootpa and Tanunda delivered the highest scoring match of the day.

Nuriootpa held on for a 3-2 victory.

In the Under 13s Trinity and Two Wells were so evenly matched that extra time was required. Trinity converted an extra time short corner to take victory.

The association was pleased to have Levi Stephen, an international umpire return to his grass roots to officiate the senior men’s games.
