Rock dust thrills

16 Jul, 2009 10:22 AM
A new ‘volcanic rock’ mineral fertiliser has helped one of South Australia’s leading organic grape growers increase yields - without affecting quality.

Trial results released by Adelaide-based Fishers Creek Rock Dust reveal that Kalleske family vineyards recorded an average 14 per cent increase in yields during the 2008/09 growing season after applying the rock dust.

The latest results across three separate trials confirm that when applied to grapevine soils Fishers Creek Rock Dust helps increase soil fertility to drastically improve bunch weights.

Baume tests also indicate that grapes from Rock Dust-applied vines subsequently ripen more optimally.

Kalleske vigneron John Kalleske said he was thrilled with the trial results on his organically grown grapevines.

“One of the great challenges with any organic farming is ensuring there are enough nutrients and minerals available to the plant in the soil,” said Mr Kalleske.

“Using Fishers Creek Rock Dust minerals in conjunction with our usual composting programs looks like it may be the perfect combination of minerals and organic material for seasonal and long-term requirements.

“These results are promising for grape growers seeking to increase yields and soil fertility without compromising their organic status.”

The Rock Dust is a finely ground mineral fertiliser sourced from Far North Queensland that works to balance soil conditions and encourage healthy plant growth.

Rich in Calcium, Magnesium and Iron, the Rock Dust is certified for organic farming and contains over 50 macro and micro nutrients, including Silica that has been scientifically proven to greatly increase cell wall strength and protect plants from extreme weather conditions.

The results from Kalleske vineyards are consistent with 18 other trials conducted by Fishers Creek Rock Dust recently across other major wine producing regions of SA.
