Nuriootpa pounce on Barossa errors

07 May, 2009 11:16 AM
Nuriootpa proved an unpopular visitor to Williamstown Oval on Saturday with an impressive 35-point win over Barossa District.

The Tigers bounced back from last week’s loss to Angaston to take their record a credible 2-1.

Without key utility Shaun Ribbons, Nuriootpa struck early and dominated the first term to set up the win by putting Barossa under such pressure that they could not get out from underneath.

The Bulldogs, while matching Nuri on the scoreboard across the next two terms, never looked likely to find their groove leaving coach Rian Nelson to lament the costly errors that plagued his team.

“We had far too many skill errors that hurt us at the worst moments,” Nelson said. “In the end we were a little lucky as they should have put us away early.”

Having allowed their opponents 33 scoring shots, Barossa must tighten up their play in the middle and across halfback, as they no longer have the luxury of Ross Christie playing centre half back.

In the past Christie has been able to mop up and nullify any mistakes that occur.

If there was a positive for the Dogs it came in the form of Tom McCarthy (Barossa’s under 17 captain) who made an impressive debut at senior level and looks to be a player with a bright future.

After fighting back to within two goals during the third term, Barossa again lost all momentum after Michael Taylor gave away a 50-metre penalty and from that point on Nuri looked home.

Tiger mentor Ian Stafford was happy to win but not totally satisfied with his team’s performance.

“We didn’t play all that well really,” Stafford said. “We’re a long way from where we expect to be.”

Chris Gerhardy proved he still has plenty left in the tank with a strong display on the wing while Nat Salter and Jarrad Tregenza contributed well for the winners.

The Tigers host the enigmatic Donnybrooks this Saturday in what should be an interesting clash.

Nuriootpa’s wins have been excellent and they take on Willaston who will be looking to bounce back after losing to Tanunda.

Barossa has the opportunity to balance their record with a win at Freeling but will need to clean up their skills and start playing from the first bounce against the young Redlegs.
