Bombers fly home
Kapunda set up an important victory over Freeling with an exceptional effort against the wind in the third term.
The Bombers ran out eventual winners by 34 points in the second Mickan - Shanahan cup match for the season at Dutton Park.
“It was a fantastic quarter (third) of football by the boys and critical in the win,” coach Damian Prouse said. “We actually took a bit of a leaf out of the way Freeling played in the second term.
“Slowing the game down, playing possession football and executing well. There was a five-goal wind to the trotting track end of the ground and the conditions were interesting.
“On their performance Saturday, Freeling are still able to cause an upset or two over the remaining rounds.”
After coming off his Maynard medal win at the SA Country Championships, Brad Valentine continued to show his hardness around the ball and tremendous endurance in another best on ground performance.
Captain Nathan Brady played a strong leader’s game at centre half forward, while Mick Mickan kicked four goals as a opportunist half forward and then later in the game quelled the influence of Scott Leal.
Adam Turrell did his best work in a sweeping role across half back, while Mark Cussadia produced his usual dash and speed from his wing.
While Michael Kerr didn’t have much influence when he was up forward, when Prouse moved him into ruck, he had an immediate impact on proceedings.
Using himself off half back, Leal was the Redlegs’ best, eventually finding himself again being tagged, despite playing in the back six.
Captain Darren Leske gave his usual uncompromising commitment to the ball and the body in the middle, while Russell Clark, Josh Newberry and Jimmy Lienert had some influence.
Brad Muster and Lachie Heinrch got their share of the ball while Paris Fowden proved to be a solid target with four goals.
Kapunda now have a critical game against Angaston at Panther Park this week, while Freeling go into their home clash with Willaston with every chance of victory, after Prouse suggested they are the best bottom-placed team he’s ever seen in a country football competition.
Tigers roar gets louder
The resurgence of Nuriootpa continued at home on Saturday when they scored a 17-point win over final’s hopeful South Gawler.
After a winless first six games, the Tigers have now won five of their last six matches and themselves are now in the race for a top four position.
Maligned for a possession-style game which supposedly restricted scoring opportunities Nuriootpa has set the BLG world on its heels.
The Tigers had first use of the breeze drawing first blood through key forward Justin Trewren with a reply from Lion Anthony Johnson, coming off his wing. Goal for goal saw the scores level at the first change.
Anton Gerardis made up for several South missed chances with two quick goals. Adrian Costa snapped one at the four minute mark of the second term and the favoured Lions looked on their way to victory.
But then, in an extraordinary period of 14 minutes of football neither side was able able to score.
As South had the wind at their back you would say this is where they lost the contest and perhaps the opportunity for September action.
The Lions still looked on track when they extended their half time two-goal-plus lead with three out of the first four goals of the premiership quarter to go to a daunting 26-point lead.
But then Nuriootpa picked up with precise handling and good movement. Daniel Romeo was a good example notching two goals to have the home team just a goal behind at the last change.
Led by skipper Shaun Gibson Nuri applied the pressure with three goals to be a couple up then South made one last gasp to tie the scores until Trewren took a sensational one hand mark from which he goaled. A defensive error handed another to the home team and then Trewren kicked the last of the game to bring his tally to six, and confirm the victory.
Shaun Gibson’s 13 possession last quarter helped the Tigers dominate the closing stages making him the game breaker.
Trewren had a double role with the absence of Fiegert and finished with six goals. Daniel Romeo was the standout of the Tiger’s pace attack and there was wonderful assistance from midfielder Billy Nicholls, ruckman Seth Matson, who beat two, and rebounding roaming defender Ryan Foulis.
South were well served by the speedy Alex Carapetis, five-goal forward Anton Gerardis, defender Casey Schell, swish midfielder Aaron Bayliss and perennial ball magnet Andrew Bevis.
Steam rolled
The Tanunda juggernaut continues to steam roll along, last Saturday destroying a young and inexperienced Willaston combination by 21-goals.
Indicative of the difference between the two sides was the scoreboard, where Tanunda had 42 scoring shots to just 11 by the Donnybrooks and 12 different players made the goal scorer’s sheet.
“In my opinion it was our best game all year,” Tanunda coach Steve Lubcke said.
“For about the last four weeks we’ve been in cruise mode and I asked the players to find another 10 per cent.
“Their usage of the ball and finding the correct player was exceptional and our tackle count was the highest it has been all year.
“It was a great team contribution and our structures were right and players were overlapping and using the first option.
“There was a blustery four-to-five goal wind to the entrance gate end and Willaston used a defensive sweeper with the breeze.”
Tanunda onfield general Malcolm Greenwood produced a superb four-quarter effort for the second week in a row to be best on ground.
Veteran Jon Keiboom was a rock at centre half back for three quarters and then on the ball in the last term.
Fellow defender Matt Elson gave the Magpies plenty of run and rebound, while Barry Kaesler and Ben Britton were strong tall options in attack.
The Magpies’ coaching staff were also very happy with the performance of young Richie Kruger, who had the better of the SANFL experienced Willaston mid-season recruit Chad Norsworthy.
Goalless until half time, Alex Kennedy still finished with another six majors to have 80 for the season, at an average of over seven a match.
Kaesler and the best finisher in the competition, Boh Wall finished with three goals each, while the trio of Greenwood, Britton and Ryan Bignell helped out with two each.
For the Donnybrooks who have now fallen to seventh place, it was a modest day at the office.
While Chris McLean and 2007 Schluter medallist Shaun Baker secured a number of possessions, many were in ‘dead man’s land’ in defence and didn’t hurt the opposition.
Mathew Brooks was handy as was Michael Chomick.
Among five first year players in the Donnybrooks’ line up Matt Gersch (the club’s under 17s captain) made his debut.
The Magpies have a well-deserved bye this week, and Willaston must find some winning ways as they travel up to Freeling.
Panthers on the prowl
Forget your AFL blockbusters or popular SANFL teams rediscovering themselves, real football was on display at Angaston Oval last Saturday when form team Gawler Central and inconsistent Angaston went head-to-head in a 10-point thriller.
Both teams were very close to their full list and set the tone of the game with an 11-goal first quarter.
Angaston took a seven-point lead into quarter time.
The heat didn’t go off in the second with goal-for-goal footy then Angaston skipper Matt Doecke’s unerring radar after a trademark successful weaving run, a third to Scott Rathjen and then a first success to Andrew Pech saw the Panthers go into the long break three-goals-plus to the good.
Four Tiger goals in five minutes erased any Panther speculations of a runaway win.
Central went on an eight-goal rampage for the term and King’s goal just before the siren was possibly goal of the game.
Brenton Bascombe and Michael Danielle effected some damage control for Angaston with successes at the other end.
Bascombe then kicked a long range goal hard against the boundary to kick-start Angaston’s last term surge, however three straight goals by Central looked to put the game in their keeping.
Angaston didn’t go away however as Andrew Pech found space to slot through two miracle goals. Minutes later Bascombe nailed his fifth from the 50 and Angaston were ahead then the Panthers were home when Elliot Hadden kicked truly.
Angaston co-captain Brenton Bascombe responded to his coach’s challenge to probably be their best.
Midfielder Michael Danielle outweighed some clangers with important possessions and three vital goals. Wingman Greg Bain easily justified his rep team selections, defender Brandon Kurtz, ruckman Kym Reimann, relentless midfielders Craig Harvey and Andrew Pech all were important.
For Gawler Central ruckman Luke Howard put in a tremendous four quarter effort and did a lot of work around the ground also. Aaron King’s permanent move onto the ball was the spark that put Gawler Central back into the contest. Onball superstar Brad Taylor, Clint Hill, Graham Cooke along with youngsters Damien Hillebrand, Jamie Scott and Ryan Clasholm were all noticeable.
