The Sandy Creek cricket club’s debut season in the Barossa and Light cricket association has seen the Cockatoos surprise many with their competitive results.
Too often in sport the term leadership is overused - but the Cocky’s A1 team has witnessed true leaders in action during their 91-run win over Nuriootpa.
Firstly, the team captain Corey Roberts ripped through the Tigers’ tail order to finish with figures of 5/43 from 12.2 overs.
Roberts also had a run out to his name, to help give his team a shot at chasing a total that was within reach.
Having dismissed the visitors for 196 the Cockys were looking shaky at 3/55 at the end of day one.
Fortunately, club president and opening batsman Bill Fuller was 22 not out and determined to right the ship when play resumed on Saturday.
Fuller smashed the ball all over Williamstown oval to reach his century by the end of the first session (about 20 overs).
Although Fuller’s innings (160) was peppered with convincing fours and sixes, his ton was reached with a nervous bottom edge that went past first slip.
“I had a pretty good day but we really needed someone in our line up to make a score as we were in a tough spot and we lost another wicket fairly early in the day,” Fuller said.
“It’s been a long time between drinks. My previous best of 120 was made around 10 years ago.
“This was a very important win, we know Nuri will always be one of the teams around the mark at the end of the year.
“Corey set us up with a great spell, he just seems to be able to knock guys over with his bowling, which is very deceptive.
“We need to build on this now and continue our momentum as a team.”
Next week Sandy Creek face their biggest test since joining the competition as they head to Tanunda to face last season’s runners up - who lost to Angaston by 10 runs last week despite an outstanding 109 run knock from the Magpie captain Boh Wall.
