For Jay Nash the 2010 AFL season is all about opportunities.
After playing 43 games in his six seasons at Windy Hill the Nuriootpa-born halfback has landed at Alberton.
His move was part of a four-team trade that sent Mark Williams from Hawthorn to Essendon in return for the Power’s number 16 pick during trade week.
He is now looking to restart his career.
Nash’s arrival is well-timed with the retirement of Peter Burgoyne opening up a spot for a running half back player, a role Nash played at Essendon and the same role the Power’s coaching staff have in mind for the former Bomber.
Nash is the sixth player with Barossa, Light and Gawler heritage to find a home with the Power, joining Justin and Mathew Westhoff, Jonathon Giles, Brad Symes and Nathan Steinberner without including Kent and Wade Kingsley who spent a matter of hours in Port Adelaide’s inaugural squad before being traded to North Melbourne.
“I guess it was a change I needed, a fresh start of sorts,” Nash said.
“There’s a lot of similarities in the systems at both clubs and I knew a few of the guys pretty well.
“Obviously I knew the Westhoff boys but when I was 16 I went away with the Australian under 16 team and got along really well with Steven Salopek and Michael Pettigrew.”
While the physical demands of football are obvious, the Power has taken a new direction this year with the appointment of Jenny Williams and Jan Stirling to assist the players off field growth and leadership skills.
“That’s been really good for me as a new player to the club. We see Jenny a couple of times a week and she gives some good advice, she’s a really strong person (a lot like her brother Mark)”.
After wearing number 17 in his time with the Bombers Nash has taken a step back in time, adopting number 22 with the Power.
“I chose 22 because I wore it in a premiership at Central Districts when I was 16.
“My dad (John) has since given me a history lesson of some great players who wore it at Port Adelaide like Greg Phillips so I’m pretty pleased to have a good number.”
Coincidentally, 22 is the number worn by Josh Mahoney, another recycled player who found a niche with the Power and played in their 2004 premiership team after not being able to cement a place on a list at other clubs.
Unfortunately Nash missed Saturday’s NAB Cup win by Port Adelaide being rested after suffering slight tightness around his groin.
