Kapunda appears to have ended Barossa District’s chances of playing finals’ footy in 2009.
The Bombers inflicted a 29-point loss on the Barossa Bulldogs at Kapunda on Saturday.
The home side was boosted by the return of key forward Jay Johnson but lost Toby Johnson on Saturday morning due to illness.
After an intense, even first quarter it looked as though Barossa was about to take control in the second but a tactical move of Nathan Brady into the ruck spawned a Bomber explosion.
Kapunda kicked the next five goals to leave Barossa deflated and trailing by 17 points at half time.
Brodie Cox was damaging (changing at full forward with Brad Taylor) and finished with five goals while Johnson was fantastic at centre half forward with his 20 possessions and 10 marks.
“Jay’s game was outstanding and his presence really makes us a better team,” said Andrew Milligan, Kapunda coach.
“Brad was great again and it’s easy to forget that he’s only just turned 23 because he’s such a mature player.
“Our playing style was terrific and it was a really good day with the reserves winning and the under 17s pulling off a major upset.”
Milligan is keenly looking towards season 2010, as he believes the club has a great base to build on.
For Barossa coach Rian Nelson it’s a case of persisting with the youth at his disposal.
Barossa fielded a team with no imports and 10 players under the age of 20.
The move is setting the club up for next season while keeping the spark necessary to win games over the course of this year.
“I was pretty happy with our intensity which we’ve lacked in recent weeks but in the end we lost so there’s still more to do,” Nelson said.
Heath Commane kicked eight goals and looks a chance to reach the 100-goal mark.
Kapunda has an opportunity to move level with both Willaston and Barossa if they can beat Willaston this week.
Barossa host Tanunda in a game that is likely to add more pain for the Bulldog faithful.
