Convincing Kapunda

02 Apr, 2009 09:32 AM
Kapunda has claimed the Barossa and Light A1 cricket title with a commanding 147 run win over Tanunda last weekend.

The win is Kapunda’s first at A1 level since 2004/05 and second in a 10-year period that has seen them constantly around the mark as a cricket power in the Barossa and Light competition.

After winning the toss and batting on Saturday Kapunda took control early compiling an imposing 5/321.

It was a solid team batting performance with Mark Johnson finishing with 83 not out, Sam Ryan 59 not out, Matt Ryan 58, Paul O’Reilly 33. Rob Johnson and captain Craig Reimann chipped in with 30 apiece.

In reply on Sunday, Tanunda could manage just 174 with good contributions from Gavin Werner 54 and an impressive 41-run innings from 17 year old Christian Gattemayer.

Kapunda’s bowlers sealed the win as ‘man of the match’ O’Reilly, bowling right arm express, took 3/26 and Sam Ryan’s silky medium pace yielded 4/17.

Sam Ryan said was proud of his teammates.

“It was a great win because everyone contributed,” Ryan said. “That’s been the strength of this team all year.

“There are no outstanding individuals, each player does their little bit.”

Tanunda captain Boh Wall had plenty of praise for Kapunda.

“I have to give Kapunda credit,” Wall said. “They simply outplayed us and out-batted us in particular.

“They have a fair bit of experience and despite losing I was very proud of our lads.

“Our win over Nuri last week was fantastic.”

In the other senior grades, Lyndoch took out A2 with a 76-run win over a previously unbeaten South Gawler.

Lyndoch were propelled to victory by a brilliant performance by Matt Bitter who scored 75 runs along with taking a handy 3/33.

Gilbert Valley took off the A3 pennant beating Tanunda by 29 runs after Sam Goodfellow took 5/31 to tear through the Tanunda batting line up.

Gawler Central broke through in A4 in a low-scoring victory over Light Pass. Adam Hunt proved crucial with an unbeaten 55 for the Tigers.

Kapunda completed a hat trick of misery for Tanunda by winning the A5 trophy over Tanunda White with Kym Jarman taking 3/23 for the winners.
