The Barossa/Riverland hockey teams were the big winners at the weekend’s State Zone Championships.
The tournament splits the State into six zones (Country West, Mid North, Barossa/Riverland, Country East, City East and City West) with four junior grades and senior mens and womens competitions.
The Zone Championship has replaced the State Country Championships and is essential the state title weekend.
The senior men capped off the weekend with a win, in the second period of extra time, against the City East combination.
The men won three of their four minor round matches, scraped through the semi final with a 2-1 win over Country East and faced the City East in Monday’s final.
The city boys jumped to the early lead, but Barossa/Riverland fought back with Evan Boland and Mark Cruikshank prominent up forward.
The country combination looked to have taken the lead late in the second half, but a goal was disallowed and extra time was required to secure the victory.
The senior women had a solid tournament, finishing third after the minor round, but were knocked out in their semi final by Country West.
The junior Barossa/Riverland teams enjoyed great success. Three of the four junior grand finals featured Barossa/Riverland teams.
The Under 17 girls finished top after the minor rounds under the guidance of coach Graham Fechner - and cruised to a 2-0 victory in the grand final.
The U17 boys also claimed a grand final win with a skilful display of hard hitting hockey.
The Under 15 girls made the grand final after a very tough semi, but they went down to City East.
The Under 15 boys made it to the semi finals on Sunday night after a fantastic weekend of hockey.
They went down in the semi final to City West who were the eventual grand final winners.
