Kapunda found some late season form on the back of an inspired performance from former captain Sam Ryan and defeated Willaston for the second time in 2010.
The team’s ‘spiritual leader’ was best on ground and accented his great form with a bag of four goals.
It was the sort of inspiring performance his team could build from in a close contest and helped push Kapunda to a 21 point victory.
The Bombers started brightly but had to withstand a Donnybrook charge on the Willaston deck in the second quarter. The third term was the clincher, the lead was extended by the team that has achieved a far more settled season.
While Sam Ryan returned to the sort of form that helped deliver back-to-back premierships only a handful of years ago there were a couple of key big men playing big roles. Toby Johnson and Adam Turrell were important contributors, both showing their ability to leap high into the air to win the ball and delivering four goals between them.
A squadron of class Bombers - Kim Bisset, Brad Valentine and Craig Prior - were also prominent and they helped secure the Bomber’s fourth win and secured seventh spot on the ladder.
For the home side Michael Brown delivered his best football of the season and Shaun Childs continued a purple patch of form - he’s been in the Donnybrook’s best two in four out of the past five matches.
Shaun Baker again proved that he could play a part even though he’s not super fit and he was again his side’s most productive forward.
Willaston are stranded with their single victory of the 2010 season and seem almost certain of securing the club’s first wooden spoon in the history of the BL&G (that is since 1987).
A win against South this week would be a great boost for all involved, but unless it comes by a huge margin the Donnybrooks will remain below them on the ladder. Not that I really understand how the percentage works.
