Hard work for Gawler Central before finals

17 Aug, 2010 03:46 PM
Gawler Central secured a 12th win of the season when they travelled to Freeling on Saturday and wrapped up third spot on the ladder in the process.

In a low-scoring game the Tigers worked hard in the heavy conditions to build a significant final margin of 46 points.

Matt Whelan had the biggest influence on the game and was well supported by Cam Williams and Luke Howard.

Scott Hahn produced another typically productive game that included five goals and a mention in the best player list.

He moved his goal tally along to 95 for the season and remains a big chance of bringing up his century during the finals.

The breezy conditions made it tough for goal-kickers and there were only two other players kick more than a single – Casey Thomas had three for the visitors and Luke Mensforth also booted three for the Redlegs.

In fact, if you take a look around the grounds Scott Hahn’s five was two goals better than any other individual managed in any game.

Freeling had to adapt to their coach, Malcolm Greenwood, guiding the team from the sideline instead of leading by example in the middle as he sat out nursing sore ribs.

Luke Mensforth’s workrate in the Redleg’s forward line was rewarded with goals and the nod as the team’s best player.

A few of the usual suspects were up to their usual high standard - Shane Schubert, Andrew Kemp and Darren Leske – and a couple of less-heralded players – Casey Lippasaar and Dale Thatcher were also productive.

Freeling have the tough trip to Tanunda to face up to for their final outing of 2010 but we can expect them to play with freedom and have a real dip.

An upset result might be out of reach, but everything will be on the line.

It will be interesting to see if Greenwood’s ribs are on the mend, or whether he takes another chance to sit back and take stock from the coach’s box.

Craig Dawe’s team now gets a week off to freshen up for the finals’ campaign.

For most of the season the Tigers had threatened to grab a top-two spot and thumb their noses at all the ‘experts’ that said they would struggle to make an impact this season.

They now have a couple of weeks on the track to prepare for their semi-final challenge against Angaston.
