FREELING won their first senior colts final in about 40 years at Willaston on Saturday with a 41-point belting of Nuriootpa.
The Redlegs came out of the blocks strongly kicking four goals to two in the first quarter and proving that any midfield led by ‘A graders’ Jake Martin and Aaron Cocks is extremely dangerous.
Nuriootpa fought back in the second quarter to be just two goals down at the major break.
However, Freeling broke away in the ‘premiership (third) quarter’ and led by the biggest margin of the game at the final break before breaking the game right open to win convincingly.
Freeling coach Geoff Cocks was pleased with the contribution of each player and stated they would be going about their next final the same way with everyone being in the side to do a job.
“It was a complete team effort all round, there were no standouts,” Cocks said.
“And we will be looking for the same contribution from everyone in two weeks.
“The boys were pretty fired up to win going into the game as the underdogs after Nuriootpa beat us last time we met.”
Freeling’s best were the twin combination of the Martin brothers Angus and Jake in the midfield, Jake especially, in kicking three match winning goals. Aaron Cocks slotted straight back into the senior colts in fine style kicking one goal and racking up a number of quality possessions in the middle.
Best players for Nuriootpa were quality youngsters Adam Coloquhoun, Jake Dahms and proven playmaker Sam Lee while Alec Bryce contributed with two quality goals.
Freeling will take on the loser of the second semi-final clash between South Gawler and Barossa District. - Aaron Bain
