Angaston Panthers on the prowl

13 Jul, 2010 03:57 PM
Angaston recovered from a slow first quarter to record a solid 53-point win over the Kapunda Bombers.

Kapunda looked lively early and matched the home side in most areas.

The Bombers punished any mistakes by moving the ball with purpose to their in-form spearhead Wes Farley who rewarded them with four goals in the first half.

At the other end of the field, the disparity between the two teams began to show as Angaston’s abundance of scoring options were all getting involved.

Matt Duldig was clinical on his way to six goals, Andrew Pech, Brenton Bascombe and Kent Kingsley all finished with three majors while their captain Matt Doecke collected a pair, the first courtesy of a handball from Kingsley in the goal square.

With a six-goal lead at half-time Angaston coach Craig Hadden had the luxury of putting his big gun back in the holster as Kingsley sat out the rest of the game on the bench.

The biggest injury news to come out of this game was field umpire Kristian Whittaker who limped from the ground at quarter-time with a calf injury forcing Gerry Daff who had umpired the reserves to quickly don the whites once more to help Brian Koch finish the game.

Kym Bissett was the Bombers’ best while Mark Cussadia was always ready to pounce and collected a pair of goals thanks to his hard running.

“I thought they really made us earn the win,” Hadden said.

“We were poor early and recovered okay from that, and although I’m happy to get the win, we know there’s a lot of room for improvement.”

Hadden was pleased with the efforts of his younger players with Nick Falland and Jack Ryan both impressive.

Kapunda coach Rodney Brown was disappointed.

“That was possibly our worst performance of the year,” Brown said.

“It was a step back from what we’ve been doing in recent games.”

The Bombers were particularly troubled when Angaston moved the ball quickly, kicking long to expose holes in the Kapunda defence.

Angaston’s Phil Bennett was rewarded for his shutdown job on Farley in the second half. His best player award was fitting for keeping the dangerous forward scoreless after moving onto him.

Kapunda go into next week’s home clash against longtime rival Freeling with a chance to draw level on points with the sixth-placed Redlegs.

Angaston head to South Gawler this week to face a Lions team off the bye.

The Panthers will be aware of the need to keep winning in order to maintain their place in the top four which is not yet set in stone.
