The Angaston Strokers collected the first trophy of the 2011/12 cricket season by winning the Vine-Inn Big Bash at Nuriootpa on Sunday.
The Strokers triumphed over the Vine-Inn Roar in a shortened final (15 overs-per-side), due to a dominant performance by Brandon Kurtz. He made 87 runs off less than 30 balls as he dispatched the Roar’s attack to all areas of the park in
a remarkable display of power hitting.
Having set the Roar a target of 150, Angaston’s bowlers went to work by dismantling the Roar who finished at 9/110. Not even Adelaide Crows football star Bernie Vince, who had been the hero for the Roar earlier in the day, could help his side to victory.
Vince had an unbeaten knock against the Freeling Waterfowls in a knockout game. Then in the semi-final he made spectacular spectator viewing when he caught the ball just before reaching the boundary rope and lofted it before running back into play and completing the dismissal to draw the match and send it into a one-over shootout, where his team was successful.
Angaston captain Brett Burgess was elated but realistic when summing up.
“It’s fantastic to get the win,” he said. “The $1000 prize money will be handy for our club but that said it was not our main objective.
“It was good that a couple of guys found form and hopefully Kurtzy can translate that into some scores on Saturdays. He’s been good this season and if he can turn his 20s and 30s into 50s we’ll be a lot stronger at the business end of the season,” Burgess said.
The event proved another big success for the organisers adding strength to cricket in the region.
Next year the Nuriootpa club will pay close attention to the irrigation system that came on overnight, which caused the pitch on oval one unplayable for the first hour of the day.
