Barossa boxer dedicates win to road crash casualty

23 Feb, 2010 05:20 PM
Boxer Shane Taylor paid tribute to a former school friend with a points win at the Golden Grove Arts and Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

Taylor, 20, dedicated his victory to Asha Woods who was tragically killed in a road accident near Lyndoch just over 24 hours earlier.

“I can’t believe Asha’s gone,” Taylor said.

The Gawler East fighter was talking straight after his three-round bout against Tom Morrison from the Morphett Vale Boxing Club.

“I went to school with Asha and she was a girlfriend of one of my best mates.

“It is unbelievable.”

Taylor jumped with joy revving up the crowd after gaining his points decision.

He then got down on his knees and kissed the canvas.

“That was to give thanks for God for the win and pay tribute to Asha.”

Taylor, who fights out of the Barossa Boxing Club in Nuriootpa, has been in the sport for two-and-a-half years.

He has had seven fights for five wins and two losses and recently won the South Australian state championship for the 57kg division.

Another Barossa fighter female Uschi Artym wasn’t as lucky losing a points decision to Joanna Kruk in their four-round fight.

“She was quick and strong and just too good on the night,” Artym said.

“I gave it my best but it wasn’t good enough.

“But it was good to have a fight against quality opposition. No matter how hard you work in the gym there is nothing like an actual bout to help your improvement.”

Artym, 33, said it would help her preparation to go to Perth later this year for Australian selection trials.

“Joanna will be in the 57kg class while I will be down in the 54kg division.”

The Angaston fighter said she expected to have one more bout in Adelaide before heading off to the trials.
