It’s not often that people are happy to just run second but last Thursday night, Eden Valley’s Jan Jones was delighted.
Her greyhound Strictly Mambo came from last early to run a gallant second in the $80,000 Adelaide Cup over 515 metres.
Jan collected $12,825 for the second prize to take Strictly Mambo’s earnings to just under $28,000.
Pretty good for a greyhound who has only had 29 starts for 13 wins and eight placings.
“It was a great thrill,” Jan said. “The winner is very good and Strictly Mambo ran extremely well.”
Although beaten five-and-three-quarter lengths, Strictly Mambo was clocked to run a final section of the race than the winner.
The placing continued the excellent run of success for Jones who last week was named as South Australia’s leading owner-trainer for 2009 at the annual Greyhound of the Year awards.
“After last Thursday, a few people have been telling me to take him to Melbourne to see if he can take another step up.
“But I also think he will run a bit further so I’m thinking of maybe trying to find a suitable race over 600 metres.”
Jan and her husband Tony bred a litter of pups by the stud dog Surf Lorian out of their bitch Ask Any Dancer.
Six of the seven have won races with Strictly Mambo being the most successful.
Just six weeks ago, Ask Any Dancer whelped a litter of 11 to the stud dog Collision and Jones is very happy with the litter.
“There was not much interest in Ask Any Dancer’s first litter but I’m sure there will be this time and with so many I’ll have to sell some.”
The Jones moved to their Eden Valley property from Greenock about 15 years ago after Jan had taken out a trainer’s licence in the early 1990s.
