Jake Jones is on track for yet another top performance this weekend in his chosen passion of drifting.
The Tanunda 21-year-old will be in action this weekend at Mallala Motor Sport Park hoping to take out the Drift Supercup and a share in $12,000 prize money.
Jake will compete against some of Australia’s best drifters at the two-day event which attracted 4000 spectators at the inaugural event last year.
Drifting involves high-speed sideways action and is regarded as the fastest growing form of motor sport in the world.
After placing third in the most recent National Drift Car Championships at Sydney’s Oran Park Raceway in September last year, Jake is confident of a strong showing at Mallala.
“I will do my best. Anything is possible.” he said.
“Anyone can win on the day. A lot of it comes down to how well you handle the conditions.”
The key to drifting is not straight forward.
For the uninitiated, drifting involves far more than burnouts, burning rubber and getting cars to go sideways.
Drifters put a lot of time and effort into preparing their high performance vehicles for competition.
“Preparation is the key,” Jake said. “Car set-up is crucial to on-track success with particular attention paid to suspension and tyre pressures. “
And when the action starts driver technique comes into play.
“Once we’re on the track we are always chasing grip.”
The event will feature 64 drifters from around Australia with 32 competing in the professional class and a further 32 lining up for the street racers category.
The Drift Supercup takes place this weekend, April 17 and 18 at Mallala Motor Sport Park.
