Light, Schubert, Stuart: What do the candidates stand for?

16 Mar, 2010 04:09 PM
LIGHT ELECTORATE

1. How will you get involved to make Murray Street, Gawler, safer after dark?

2. How will you work to solve Gawler’s major traffic congestion?

3. How will you engage in the development plans for the region?

Tony Bates

FAMILY FIRST

1. Statewide, we’re asking for more police than other parties are, and with redeployment of public servants into police, we’ll free up police to be on the beat in Gawler.

2. I will begin work on a 20-Year Gawler Transport Master Plan, starting with the road bypass we need to get the through traffic redirected around the town.

3. I will preserve farming land in Light from urban sprawl, growing Gawler and other towns so we protect our food security and farmers’ right to farm.

Cosie Costa

LIBERAL

1. The installation of additional CCTVs in known trouble hotpots to crack down on crime and anti-social behaviour.

2. Gawler needs a comprehensive review of road and traffic needs to formulate plans to deliver long-term solutions for our growing population and investigating the opportunity to introduce an eastern bypass in the future.

3. The community deserves improved consultation earlier in the planning process to ensure future development is properly planned and integrates with the existing community.

Penny Johnston

GREENS

1. Factors, which could assist, include the responsible service of alcohol; a visible police presence; availability of public transport or taxis home; adequate lighting; CCTV cameras; and sentencing of offenders which includes requiring vandals to themselves make good any criminal damage they have committed.

2. A fundamental question is whether Gawler’s 19th century bridges and roads can accommodate any more traffic.

I believe that the answer is ‘no’.

The Minister should reject the Gawler East Development Plan Amendment.

3. There needs to be a much more rigorous assessment of the suitability of land for housing and the massive infrastructure, environmental and social strains that will be placed on existing residents as a result.

Tony Piccolo

LABOR

1. I will work with the publicans to explore an ‘after hours’ public transport system for the town.

2. Reducing the number of cars on the road and finding suitable alternative routes for those that are committed to motor vehicle transport.

The second component requires the construction of an eastern connector to divert traffic away from the Murray Street and Adelaide Road.

3. We need to ensure development is balanced and takes into account the economic, social and environmental needs of the community.

Bus services for Gawler illustrates the government’s commitment to providing services as they are needed.

Simon Stewart-Rattray

SAVE THE RAH

1. I think it’s a good idea for more security cameras.

2. I would have to refer to town planners, but some type of north-south bypass road would be a very good idea.

3. You can’t develop an area until you have all reliable facilities in place. Start with the infrastructure and build homes last.

SCHUBERT ELECTORATE

1. How will you work to find more activities and more jobs for young people?

2. What will you do to protect and promote prime agricultural land from urban sprawl and potentially uneconomical vineyard development?

3. How can you work with the wine industry to ensure the Barossa brand is further enhanced?

4. Can you promise action to fix the Gomersal Road?

Lynda Hopgood

LABOR

1. I’m a big fan of volunteering and would love to see young people engaged in volunteering.

2. It’s all about appropriate use.

I would ensure the people working the land have a say.

3. I’m very keen for the Barossa to do what it can to maintain the title as Australia’s premium wine region. Water security is a huge part of that.

4. I would like to. I’m certainly keen to see it done.

William Smidmore

INDEPENDENT

1. I’ll instigate a program with the Barossa Council for the 16-25 age group to assist with community service to improve and promote the appearance of our Barossa Valley.

2. Educate investors, good planning policies, green belts, town boundaries and rural zoning - need to be addressed.

3. I would liase with the Australian Wine and Grape Exchange and the Barossa Grape and Wine Association to ensure we get the facts and a fair deal for all.

4. It is drastically in need of full refurbishment due to heavy vehicle traffic. Ultimately, it is an issue for the Energy, Transport and Infrastructure Department.

James Troup

FAMILY FIRST

1. I’ll fight alongside our farmers, vignerons and other primary producers as our economic engine room and reduce taxes.

2. We’ll bring in dedicated legislation to protect Schubert’s food and wine producers from urban sprawl.

3. I’ll encourage buy local campaigns, secure funding for wine marketing nationally and overseas, build up tourism and help find new international markets for Barossa wine.

4. Yes. The road is a vital link to the region but is painfully slow and needs upgrades for safety to make it a faster link to the region.

Ivan Venning

LIBERAL

1. Work to find solutions to the current problems being experienced in the wine industry; get tourism ‘back on the rails’ and promotion of small business will assist with increasing the number of jobs available in the region for our young people.

2. I believe that our best agricultural land should be quarantined for agriculture.

3. The Barossa needs to be marketed as the premium wine region that it is - the number one wine region in Australia and the world. I would like to see an accreditation system on quality introduced, not just geographical index system currently used.

4. Yes - I will be urgently requesting a new Liberal Minister to meet with both Light Regional and Barossa Councils to arrange a ‘road swap’ or a similar deal to be organised.

STUART ELECTORATE

1. How will you encourage State Government investment in the southern end of the electorate - particularly Kapunda?

2. How will you work to support country health services?

3. Do you welcome the development of new wind farms in the Mid North?

Jane Alcorn

GREENS

1. Investment in transport infrastructure for Kapunda and surrounds must be a priority.

2. Country hospitals need not only funding, but support for rural doctors, carers (as partners in care) and mental health services.

3. While renewable energy is essential and wind farms may be a part of this, there has been insufficient community consultation concerning Mid-North wind farms.

Sean Holden

LABOR

1. I’d work with the community and the council to develop a business case for roads and transport. I’d like to see a twice-daily bus service from Kapunda to Gawler.

2. I understand how important country health is.

I can guarantee no closing down of country hospitals. Labor’s over-arching policy is to offer services close to where people live.

3. I would like to see more of the science on the pros and cons - on social, cultural, environmental and economic impacts.

But I understand we need to develop more alternative energy resources.

Sylvia Holland

FAMILY FIRST

1. I’ll represent all parts of Stuart including Kapunda. Family First’s $1billion rural and regional fund will invest in infrastructure and new economic opportunities in the region.

2. Labor won’t legislate their own guarantee to keep country hospitals open, and Kapunda was a key hospital on the line.

I’ll fight to keep services and upgrade them in the region.

3. Only if my constituents do. I’ll represent what my constituents want as an independent voice for Stuart - not slot in to a major party who tells me what Stuart gets.

Dan van Holst Pellekaan

LIBERAL

1. Providing water security for the whole state is terribly important. Wherever water is saved it helps the whole state.

I would like to see improved public transport from the south end of the electorate to Adelaide.

2. The most important issue is to improve all health services.

The new Barossa Hospital is a marvellous step forward.

None of the existing hospitals will be downgraded.

3. I certainly support investment in all renewable energy sources.

I suspect geo-thermal energy from the State’s north could be more beneficial for the whole state than specific wind farms to power specific regions.
