What’s in a name

04 Feb, 2010 11:27 AM
The Regional Development Australia Barossa board (RDA Barossa) could face a name change.

A new name was proposed the first time the regional board gathered.

At the December 11 orientation meeting concerns were raised about the name Barossa.

Board members discussed the possible detraction from ‘brand Barossa’ that has been built up as a recognisable wine, food and cultural identity.

Alternatives that include ‘Barossa and Plains’, ‘Greater Barossa’, and ‘Para Rivers’ have been suggested as more accurate reflections of the board’s area of influence.

The board has not formally discussed the matter, as it will not meet until Tuesday, February 9.

“We maintain it doesn’t really matter what the name of the board is,” said Anne Moroney, the RDA Barossa chief executive officer.

“But to find a solution that is acceptable to all parties won’t happen in two minutes.”

The Barossa Council first raised opposition to the name in November.

At that stage - before the new board was officially endorsed - council elected members voted to appeal to Paul Caica, Minister for Regional Development to consider, an alternative name.

The Australian Geographical Indication ‘Barossa’ was registered in 1996.

The wine region ‘GI’ extends from Williamstown to Truro, Keyneton to Roseworthy.

The regional development zone stretches its Barossa boundary to the beaches on the eastern side of the Gulf of St Vincent and includes Gawler, Mallala and Two Wells.

Apart from the new regional development authority taking the name, the state government has also designated Barossa as the regional identity connected with other services - for example police.
