Sean’s success

23 Jul, 2009 12:27 PM
KEYNETON Motorcycle club’s Sean Throup of Pewsey Vale has won the 2009 24 Hour Reliability Trial.

Throup, 21, held off a record 170 competitors in the Eudunda event to win by a margin of just 21 seconds from runner-up Christopher Power of New Zealand.

He said it was an honour to win the event and a great feeling to cross the line with the fastest time.

“I’m obviously very happy to have won the race, especially given the quality field of riders competing here,” Throup said.

Due to an updated points system introduced this year, the winner was not announced for some days after the race.

“I knew I was in the mix. I always felt I was a good chance for the win, but you’re always waiting for that final confirmation.

“It’s a relief to have won this race at my fifth attempt.”

It was a family affair for the Throups at this year’s trial with Sean’s two brothers also competing in the race.

Younger brother Nick, 18 also had a successful event finishing seventh while Sean’s twin brother Tristan failed to finish due to mechanical failure.

“I thought Tristan would be right up there with the leaders but unfortunately the bike let him down. Nick’s effort to finish in the top ten at his second attempt was unbelievable.

“They’re both going to be stiff competition for me next year, that’s for sure.”

Throup has been riding motorbikes his whole life and started competing in 24 hour events at 17.

His only disappointment this year was that ten-time champion Shane Deiner failed to finish the race.

“I would have preferred to have beaten Shane with him finishing but I look forward to that contest next year.”

Throup’s latest race win is not his first taste of success. He’s competed strongly around the circuit for several years.

He won a silver medal in the Australian four-day endurance race last year, one of Australia’s big races featuring top riders from around Australia and overseas.

He said he was grateful for the support of his family and thanked his sponsors including, Yamaha, AXO Gearing and Shark Helmets.

The 24 Hour Reliability Trial is one of Australia’s most prestigious off-road motorcycle events.

The trial involves a dozen competitive stages within each 250km lap, with each competitive stage followed by a “travelling stage” when riders are not against the clock.

Held since 1924, it is the second-longest running motorcycle event in the world.
