PERFECT weather set the scene for the Declaration of Vintage in Tanunda on Sunday.
Forecasting the result of the 2012 vintage, Louisa Rose said things were looking like another good year.
“You know it’s a good vintage when winemakers are relaxed and even have time to go to lunch,” she said.
“Grapes are well-coloured and the flavour is also very good. All we have to do is pick the grapes at the right time for a great result.
“Harvesting of white wine grapes is well under way in the Barossa Valley and reds will begin next week. Eden Valley is on target to begin picking within a few weeks too.
“Early predictions are that quality will be very good albeit with a less than average yield.”
Fiona McDonald was named “Winemaker of the Year” by the Barons of the Barossa.
The senior winemaker at Seppeltsfield Winery, Ms Donald has been instrumental in breathing life back into the historic gravity feed winery.
“I am really so honoured to receive this acknowledgement from the Barons of Barossa,” she said.
“When I came back here after a year in Europe, I rediscovered what a wonderful place this is - the winemaking community, grape quality and cultural heritage are compelling.
“And of course I would like to acknowledge the support of the Seppeltsfield Estate board and the entire team.”
John Schiller, a fourth generation Barossa farmer with vineyards in Nuriootpa and Ebenezer was announced as “Vigneron of the Year”.
Len Evans, who was inducted as a Baron of Barossa in 1976, was honoured with a plaque presented to his wife Trish for inclusion on the “walk of fame”.
It was also a special day for legendary wine scientist Ray Beckwith, who celebrates his 100th birthday tomorrow (Thursday) and joined in the activities.
