Public opinion on the introduction of the McDonalds fast food chain to the Barossa is divided.
Research conducted in 2007 revealed a split down the middle.
At that time the Barossa Community Co-operative Store considered a ‘golden arches’ franchise for the corner of Gawler and Second Street in Nuriootpa.
David McArthur, Barossa Community Co-operative Store chief executive officer, explained that confidential research was conducted in late 2007.
“The conclusion, generally, was about half for the development and half against,” Mr McArthur said.
The research itemised the findings for each of the Barossa’s major towns, but the overall result did not provide a clear direction for the Community Store.
“The co-operative board decided to withdraw the plans,” Mr McArthur said.
“As a Barossa institution, it didn’t want to disengage the community or become the centre of community debate.”
The Barossa Council is currently processing a new application for a McDonalds fast food restaurant as part of a redevelopment of land at the corner of Railway Terrace and Barossa Valley Way, Nuriootpa.
This application includes the provision of a bulk goods precinct that would include retail showrooms and warehouse space.
The council Development Assessment Panel is expected to vote on whether to proceed with formal assessment of the development at its next meeting, to be held on Tuesday, December 1.
