ABOUT 70 charity motorbike riders cruised into town over the weekend as part of a national fundraising tour in the name of childhood cancer research.
The riders, from across Australia, stopped over in Lyndoch on the last leg of their nation-wide journey.
The group was raising funds for the Steven Walter Foundation, an organisation dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer.
Local participant in the ride, Peter Cherry, of Kalbeeba, said the ride had been a huge success.
“So far we’ve raised over $300,000 on the ride, which is just fantastic for the foundation,” he said.
“We’ve raised money along the way holding events, everything from auctions to barbecues.
“It really has been great fun and all for great cause.”
The ride began more than a month ago in Tenterfield, New South Wales, and involves 50 riders along with ten pillion passengers and a support crew of around twenty.
Interstate rider Allan McGuirk, from Sylvania Waters in NSW, said the around Australia Charity Ride came about as a celebration to mark the tenth anniversary of the annual ‘Snowy Ride,’ an event designed to honour the memory of Steven Walter, a childhood cancer victim.
“We’ve been across Australia and now we’re on the last leg of our journey,” he said.
“It’s fantastic to be in the beautiful Barossa Valley, especially at this time of year.
“In a couple of days time we’ll finish up in Thredbo.”
The Steven Walter Foundation around Australia Charity Motorbike Ride will roll into Thredbo, NSW on Friday, November 5, marking the end of the successful nation-wide charity event.
