McDonalds is once again on the menu for the Barossa.
Negotiations between the multi-national conglomerate and Barossa developers are underway to build a McDonalds fast food restaurant at the corner of Railway Terrace and Barossa Valley Way in Nuriootpa.
Paul Mickan, principal planner for The Barossa Council confirmed council had received an application to develop a bulk goods precinct at the location.
Mr Mickan said the proposed development incorporates several retail showrooms, warehousing and a restaurant.
“We have received an application for a bulk goods development in Nuriootpa,” Mr Mickan said.
“The application includes the development of a restaurant received from McDonalds.”
Mr Mickan said at this stage the application was for a non-complying form of development and as such a range of approval processes would need to be satisfied before the development could be approved.
One of those processes was public consultation.
When contacted, McDonalds’ representatives declined to comment.
They referred the Herald to local developer Ian Mader.
Mr Mader said a bulk goods development was being proposed for Nuriootpa but declined to comment further.
He said he would not be in a position to comment on the details of the proposed development until mid-November.
Two years ago the McDonalds corporation made moves to establish a Barossa outlet in Nuriootpa in conjunction with the Community Co-operative Store.
These plans reportedly stalled during the community consultation phase which revealed considerable public opposition to the development.
At the time it is believed McDonalds planned to continue to pursue the option of a fast-food outlet somewhere in the Barossa with Nuriootpa believed to be the preferred option.
The latest McDonalds’ development proposal comes several years after the Barossa saw the initial development of multi-national fast-food style restaurants in the area with the arrival of the Red Rooster and Subway franchises in Nuriootpa.
