Master blaster tees off

21 Dec, 2009 04:12 PM
He’s blasted every bowling attack in world cricket and now Sir Vivian Richards is set to master the Barossa Valley Golf Course in a one-off appearance next year.

The legendary West Indian “master blaster”, from the heady days of international cricket in the 1970s and 80s, will be in the Barossa Valley on February 24.

In a remarkable coup for newly appointed BVGC general manager Damien Geyer, Richards will play a round of golf at the Nuriootpa course along with another great of the game, Aussie firebrand bowler Rodney Hogg.

Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards needs no introduction when it comes to his cricketing deeds on the Test, one-day stage and through a period that saw him one of the marquee players of Kerry Packer’s revolutionary World Series Cricket competition.

Richards made his Test debut at the age of 20 on the 1974-75 tour of India.

Going on to average over 50 in Tests and captain his team for many years, Richards was named one of the five Wisden cricketers of the century in 2002.

Tour promoter Justin Karcher is expecting Richards to provide plenty of entertainment when he steps up to the tee while those lucky enough to play with Hogg won’t be disappointed either.

“Sir Viv is an A-grade golfer, he hits the ball all right,” Karcher said from Antigua in the West Indies where he was meeting with Richards last week.

“They call him the master blaster and you can imagine how he blasts the golf ball, I’d say he’d be the master of anything sporting he turned his hand to. And Hoggy, he’s just good value on a golf course.”

A sponsor has paid for the right to play the round with Richards while the club is conducting a “lowest unique bid” competition for the chance to team up with Hogg.

Any member of the public can pay $10 to receive two bids in a dollars and cents format.

“For example, I pay $10 then I might choose two numbers such as $1.15 and $3.75. If I’m the only person to pick either one of those numbers and it’s one of the lowest three bids, then I win the opportunity to play with Mr Hogg,” explained Mr Geyer.

“The trick is placing a number that is low enough, but that no one else has.”

To place a bid simply call the Barossa Valley Golf Club on 8562 1589 or email on admin@barossavalleygolf.com.au and be ready with your name, credit card details and your two (2) bids. Alternatively you can visit the club in person.

An expected 36 teams will take part in the shotgun start Ambrose competition.

Packages are available to play and/or attend the Vine Inn dinner where Richards will be answering questions and signing autographs that evening.

For more information contact Damien Geyer at the club on 8562 1589.
