KAPUNDA businessman Bruce Christian appeared on ABC TV’s The New Inventors last week.
With business partner Chris Trewin, the pair of A Class electricians competed against other entries from around Australia taking out the episode win for their invention ‘Connex’.
‘Connex’ is an electrical connector suitable for a wide range of industrial and domestic applications.
It was judged to have large commercial potential.
In fact it’s the only product of its type on the market.
Bruce said ‘Connex’ was designed to connect outdoor light fittings to a building or light pole.
“Once ‘Connex’ is installed light fittings can be changed easily and efficiently as the light is not hard-wired to the pole or building,” he said.
According to Bruce, business partner Chris came up with the initial idea which they then developed together after joining forces .
“It’s a relatively simple idea,” he said. “Basically it came about when we were sitting around having a few beers and saying, there’s got to be a better way.”
It turns out there was a better way and now ‘Connex’ is set to revolutionise electrical light installation. As episode winners, Bruce and Chris go into the running for the show’s ‘Inventor of the Year’ award.
‘Connex’ has also been short-listed for the Australian International Design awards.
Once installed, the product allows light fittings to be changed without isolating the high-voltage power source.
“Maintenance can be carried out while the power is still on.”
It eliminates the need for time-consuming and costly permits and risk assessments. Potential applications range from street lighting, industry to mining and remote area uses.
The recent television segment was filmed at the ABC’s Sydney studios and on-site in Kapunda giving viewers some background on the product’s development.
“The ABC came out and spent a day filming in Kapunda for the profile segment.”
