The GreenEDGE cycling team has advised that Jack Bobridge will not be riding the Santos Tour Down Under. Scans taken on Thursday did not reveal any fractures but as a precautionary measure and to ensure a quick recovery, the team has decided to withdraw him from the race.
GreenEDGE Sports Director Matt White said, "After consulting with our chief medical officer, Dr Peter Barnes, we've decided this is the best way forward to ensure a good recovery and to allow him to him a rest before picking up training again."
It is a disappointing decision for Bobridge as he had been desperate to ride in his own state event which heads along roads he has trained for the past seven years.
But he realises it is his own best interests as well as those of his GreenEDGE team.
Bobridge injured his left wrist in an horrific fall during the National Road race title at Learmonth in Victoria on Tuesday.
"It was a freak accident," Kahl Bobridge, Jack's father said.
"He was only a kilometre into his time trial when a B-Double came speeding the other way. The high speed created a strong side wind, which blew Jack's bike from under him.
"He took a fair bit of skin off as well as hurting his wrist."
Kahl said Jack had been taken to Ballarat Hospital where no break was found.
"But his wrist was very swollen so the GreenEDGE team had him x-rayed again today."
