Gawler could be served by a metro-ticket bus service.
The Mike Rann Labor Government has made a commitment to introduce bus services to Gawler and Hewett - if it wins Saturday’s election.
No one is happier about the ‘team Rann’ commitment to public transport than Tony Piccolo.
Mr Piccolo is a regular on the Gawler-Adelaide train.
In fact, the train is his preferred transport to Parliament House for work.
He reckons he’s on the train for nine out of every 10 trips he makes into the city.
The bus service would enhance the public transport services for Adelaide’s northern ‘town’.
“I don’t agree this makes Gawler a suburb,” Mr Piccolo said. “It reinforces that we are our own town.”
The former mayor is pleased with the potential bus links.
“It is the first time this town’s had a proper bus service,” Mr Piccolo said.
“It is a commitment to infrastructure for Gawler East, before the development even starts.”
The Rann plan would see four new bus routes and more than 100 bus stops throughout Gawler and Hewett.
Gawler East, Evanston Park, Evanston, Evanston South, Evanston Gardens, Hillier, Gawler West and Willaston would also benefit from the new bus service.
The Rann Government has already committed to electrified train services to Gawler - scheduled to come into service in 2013.
