The RSL will now be given an opportunity to have a say about the controversial relocation of its honour boards.
As reported in the Herald last week, Gawler Council voted to shift the honour boards from the Town Hall entrance and foyer to the Gawler Institute and advise Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) representatives of the decision.
The move was labelled “disgraceful and disrespectful” by member for Light Tony Piccolo, who described it as “an insult to those who have served our country.”
“It is particularly galling that such a sensitive decision should be made without giving the parties involved an opportunity to be heard,” he said at the time.
However Gawler Council chief executive officer Stephen Kerrigan has confirmed council will further discuss the matter with the RSL before making a final determination on the matter.
“The honour boards are a very important item in the community and we will be discussing (the move) with the RSL,” he said.
Mr Piccolo welcomed the assurance that council will consult with the RSL.
A further report into the matter will be presented at a future council meeting.
Gawler mayor Brian Sambell said the motion to move the boards was put to the council because of space constraints associated with the institute renovations.
He said the boards are currently situated where a lift and windows will be located.
